How Often Should I Service My Car? Interim vs Full Service Explained

A GUIDE BY CANNONS AUTOMOTIVE · MORECAMBE, LANCASHIRE · UPDATED AUGUST 2026

Most drivers in Morecambe ask us the same question: “how often should I actually get my car serviced?” The honest answer is it depends on your car’s age, mileage, and how you drive it — but there are clear rules of thumb, and this guide gives you the exact ones we use every day at Cannons Automotive.

How often should I service my car?

As a general rule, most manufacturers recommend a service every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Higher-mileage drivers (motorway commuters, delivery drivers) often need a service every 6 months. Your car’s handbook and service history will tell you exactly what your manufacturer recommends — if you’re not sure, bring it in and we’ll check your service schedule for free.

What’s the difference between an interim and a full service?

An interim service is a shorter, more frequent check — ideal for cars doing higher mileage or if it’s been 6 months since your last service. It covers oil and filter change, fluid top-ups, brake check, tyre check, and a visual safety inspection.

A full service is a more thorough annual check, covering everything in an interim service plus spark plugs, air/pollen filters, brake fluid, drive belts, suspension, exhaust, and a full multi-point inspection. If it’s been 12 months since your last service, a full service is the right choice.

Do I need a full service every year even if I don’t drive much?

Yes. Fluids and rubber components degrade over time, not just mileage — brake fluid absorbs moisture, and belts perish, even sitting on the drive. If your car has covered fewer than 12,000 miles but it’s been a year, we’d still recommend at least an interim service to catch anything before it becomes a bigger, more expensive repair.

What happens if I skip a service?

  • Small issues (a slipping belt, low fluid, worn brake pads) go unnoticed and turn into expensive repairs
  • Your car may fail its next MOT for things a service would have caught
  • Warranty cover can be affected if your car isn’t serviced to the manufacturer’s schedule
  • Fuel economy typically drops as filters clog and oil degrades

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose which type of service my car gets?

Yes. Tell us your mileage and when your car was last serviced, and we’ll recommend interim or full — you always have the final say, and we’ll never push you into paying for work you don’t need.

Does servicing my car affect its MOT?

Indirectly, yes — a service catches worn brakes, tyres, lights and fluid issues that are common MOT failure points. Many of our customers book a service a few weeks before their MOT is due for exactly this reason.

How long does a service take?

An interim service typically takes around an hour. A full service usually takes 2–3 hours, depending on what your car needs. We’ll always give you a time estimate when you book.

Can you service my car if I bought it used, not from Cannons?

Absolutely — we service and repair all makes and models, regardless of where you bought the car.
